06:33 < apotheon> How hard is it to move from one of the popular desktop or smartphone wallets to a full node later?

I don't think anyone had an answer at the time.

If someone did, I missed it.

My first time in this room, interested in purchasing my first monero.
-
heat[m]
What reputable exchange can I use.
-
heat[m]
Already have my monerujo wallet setup
-
showcontroller
Do you care about KYC? Do you have fiat or bitcoin?
-
heat[m]
Just sold last of my bitcoin about 2 months ago.
-
heat[m]
Don't understand what kyc mean
-
heat[m]
Oh OK thank you
-
heat[m]
Not really interested in that route , would like to remain anon
-
heat[m]
Actually, since it is my first purchase, doesn't matter kyc to me
-
heat[m]
Right now I have fiat only
-
showcontroller
Are you in the US?
-
showcontroller
You can give localmonero a try
-
showcontroller
There's cash by mail options usually starting at $150 minimum trade
-
showcontroller
What do you mean?
-
showcontroller
KYC means some fucker wants my ID and to know where my money came from
-
heat[m]
Canada
-
showcontroller
And to that, I say fuck u
-
showcontroller
Looks like localmonero has cash by mail too for canada
-
showcontroller
It does
-
heat[m]
ππππππ thanks
-
showcontroller
But like the probably with KYC is some fucker still knows you bought monero
-
showcontroller
I'd rather the people who know if I own monero to be 0
-
showcontroller
I don't want the state asking to see my wallet to make sure I didn't sell it without telling em
-
heat[m]
That is a really good way to he
-
showcontroller
Nothing is stopping the IRS from going after all the early bitcoin people who almost certainly didn't pay tax properly
-
heat[m]
May I ask how many times you have used the mail in services?
-
showcontroller
Show up to my door with a $5 wrench and ask for my monero?
-
showcontroller
You can ask, but I'm not gonna answer. Some sellers are better than others. Some selective scammers you have to watch out for. Some people want a note or a picture of your ID
-
showcontroller
You're sending cash in the mail
-
showcontroller
Just be happy if you get anything back. Still a decent chance it all works out, tho
-
showcontroller
With monero, the receivers have no idea how much the sender has in their wallet. With bitcoin that's always a problem
-
showcontroller
I can send somebody $20 in monero and that may be the only $20 in monero I have
-
showcontroller
I can't lie about having less in my bitcoin wallet, though
-
showcontroller
Pretty easy to see periodic transfers from a cold wallet too
-
showcontroller
So you can't just stash some and take a little out
-
heat[m]
Have you had a chance to use the mailin route? How did it work out sending cash
-
rupee[m]
<apotheon "06:33 < apotheon> How hard is it"> very easy. You can just point whatever wallet you're using to your local full node. You can also use the seed phrase to restore a wallet into different wallet app and have the same "wallet" in different apps.
-
showcontroller
It works for people. Don't be surprised if you never see the money again, though. There are naughty postal workers too. Can't do much about that
-
showcontroller
I'd advise tracking and all that jazz, of course
-
showcontroller
But cash by mail is better than in person cause I don't have to worry about somebody pulling out a wrench
-
apotheon
rupee[m]: I was under the impression the seeds were particular to a specific wallet application, but I don't really know.
-
heat[m]
OK thank you, going to check out the website
-
rupee[m]
depends on the wallet. Some share the same type of seed phrase
-
rupee[m]
you could easily go from Cake to the official monero GUI, for example
-
rupee[m]
but coming from Edge wallet wouldn't be so straight forward
-
apotheon
Does the official Monero CLI work for that, too?
-
rupee[m]
yes
-
rupee[m]
you run a daemon by running monerod. That's your node. Then you run a wallet and connect to the node.
-
rupee[m]
can be monero-wallet-cli or the gui
-
rupee[m]
or monerujo or cake
-
rupee[m]
or mymonero
-
apotheon
rupee[m]: I keep forgetting the typical CLI wallet applications from the core projects aren't just the full node server these days. Last time I set up a desktop client, the CLI interface was just BTC's JSON API exported for CLI use.
-
apotheon
(a long, long time ago)

-

-
M79rainbow[m]
there is nothing preventing anyone to transact to a sub-address
-
M79rainbow[m]
so basically it means the master of the pool is going to transact to your sub-address,and It is definitely possible to do so

instead of "military grade encryption" we should start talking about "criminal grade encryption" - strong enough to keep the TLAs off your back

Anyone up for helping me debug an xmrig ->xmrig-proxy setup that seems to be hashing away but nothing is showing up on the pool side of things?
-
moneromooo
Using the right address ? The right pool ?
-
thefool
Yes and yes. :) Those are the first two things I quadruple checked.
-
thefool
I'm connecting to the pool from the proxy with no issues, my workers are happily hashing away, and I've used that receive address before and mined successfully with it before.
-
sech1
pool in proxy config overrides everything in xmrig config, check your wallet addres in proxy config

The only sign of wonkiness I get is an occasional "connection reset by peer" message on the proxy.
-
thefool
I'll pastbin it if you don't mind.
-
thefool
-
thefool
@sech1 Right, my understanding is that I point the xmrig at the xmrig-proxy via it's pool and then xmrig-proxy points to the actual pool.
-
thefool
Darn, it's definitely something with my proxy. I can mine fine directly connecting to the pool.
-
donkeydonkey[m]
hiya all. were doing a transfer with the CLI, and getting a warning bout security. something like "Transaction spends more than one very old output. Privacy would be better if they were sent separately." the originating funds are in a single subaddress. not sure how to handle this with better privacy. thanks
-
apotheon
Maybe exchange some Monero with someone else who's friendly. The problem is that, being old outputs, if they're seen on the chain as going to the same person at the same time the likelihood of them having been sent by the same person from the same wallet is high.
-
apotheon
At least, that's my understanding.
-
moneromooo
You can try again till it doesn't pick two old outs. If you don't have new outs, you can either do it anywya, since it's no biggie, or send one such output to yourself (sweep_single) and send the original tx a bit later.
-
donkeydonkey[m]
so if im tryin ta send the whole amount from the sub-address then maybe splitting it into a few smaller transfers?
-
Mochi102
I think there's a way to spend specific outputs... or freeze some too.
-
donkeydonkey[m]
balance detail command shows that the subaddress has 2 outputs. not sure how to get more info..
-
moneromooo
incoming_transfers available verbose

donkeydonkey[m]
nice one. that shows me just the account im in too. cool.
-
Mochi102
unspent_outputs is also handy
-
donkeydonkey[m]
interesting so the sending address has one of its outputs that is equal to the desired transfer amount but the transfer command didnt pick that output i guess it tried to use the other output also... does it randomly pick outputs..

showcontroller
NFT can have some interesting use cases, but they're not really being used for it at the moment
-
showcontroller
I don't see much value in an NFT even if it comes from the original artist
-
apotheon
I think a lot of the crazy ideas around NFTs right now are from people who want a replacement for DRM.
-
apotheon
. . . whereas I think we're better off shitcanning the entire idea of restricted copying.
-
apotheon
The closest I see to a good idea related to how people are currently trying to use them is a published claim of authorship.
-
showcontroller
Nope. BSD is where it's at
-
apotheon
more of a ledger of credit and source of original work than a collectible commodity
-
showcontroller
You can use it, but you gotta put my name on it. Copyleft is kinda dumb
-
apotheon

-
showcontroller
<apotheon "showcontroller: To what is "nope"> copyleft
-
apotheon

-
showcontroller
Both the various operating systems and the licenses
-
apotheon
Hell, check my freenode cloak, and notice "copyfree" as opposed to "copyleft".
-
showcontroller
GPL is a cancer in actual software development
-
apotheon
Did someone say something positive about copyleft licensing policy here?
-
apotheon
I wonder if I'm not seeing something from someone, now.

-
apotheon
I didn't see [m] on your nick, so I didn't realize that.
-
apotheon
lovely
-
apotheon
I guess your nick is too long to show the [m] here.
-
apotheon
I suppose a username that isn't valid (because of spaces) in IRC might be why I don't see the person. Yet again, the Matrix bridge creates problems of communication.
-
showcontroller
Bridging always has issues in practice
-
apotheon
seems to be the case
-
apotheon
There was a Ruby Forum bridge with the ruby-talk mailing list that, from the mailing list side at least, always seemed to be remarkably good, though.
-
apotheon
I never saw a problem with that at all.
-
apotheon
showcontroller: Do you know a console-based Matrix client with a copyfree license (e.g. BSD, ISC, or MIT) that offers vi-like keybindings?
-
apotheon
console, as in a text user interface, not a GUI
-
nioc
Because of the freenode settings the matrix name needs to be registered with freenode in order to be seen on IRC
-
apotheon
ah
-
apotheon
. . . and you can't register a name with spaces, I guess.
-
showcontroller
I just started using matrix not too long ago. Using the desktop client on my mac
-
nioc
.shrug
-
showcontroller
When I used IRC a few years back, I used hexchat
-
showcontroller
buen chico said gomuks is a terminal client for matrix
-
apotheon
I know someone who reports the Matrix bridge sometimes not allowing him to see a particular person who's in IRC, too. I wonder what that's about.
-
apotheon
showcontroller: Sure, but gomuks is AGPL.
-
apotheon
. . . so not copyfree.
-
showcontroller
I hadn't checked the license, just relaying what he said
-
apotheon
I also don't think it has vi-like keybindings.
-
showcontroller
Personally, I don't have much of a problem using GPL software. I just stay away from it when I develop software
-
apotheon
I don't really feel enthused about using software to which I'm unwilling to contribute.
-
apotheon
I know others who feel similarly.
-
apotheon
I do occasionally deal with some copyleft software, unfortunately, but I'm not going to slit my own throat over it, so . . . there we go.
-
showcontroller
Certainly depends on what the software is and how involved I want to be
-
apotheon
I'm not invested enough in Matrix to bend on licensing yet.
-
apotheon
I'm so uninvested that the only reason I'm even curious about it is that it would likely be a huge improvement over Discord.
-
showcontroller
It's written using the tcell library for Go. I actually started working on a project recently that uses a library based on tcell called tview
-
apotheon
(and I have to deal with Discord for a couple hours a week at present)
-
showcontroller
Discord is awful
-
apotheon
yeah
-
apotheon
a real shitshow
-
apotheon
and run by people who happily violate privacy for some kind of sucky bottom line
-
showcontroller
I can't believe people actually use it as much as they do
-
apotheon
I guess I'll just stick with the web client for Matrix if I end up trying it out.
-
apotheon
The console-based clients I've found all look kinda . . . meh, at best.
-
donkeydonkey[m]
buenchico not sure if you setup for irc correctly
