<hennyh> Hi all, I'm running the latest version and have a fully synched node except i've noticed that my monero daemon randomly crashes (i leave it on overnight and come back to find it stopped). Where can i find the log files which might point to the source of the error? Thanks!

problem is windows does not have any crash logs
-
DisBotXMR
<hennyh> that's unfortunate, are there any flags I can run the deamon with that'll help?
-
ditatompel
Is windows doesn't produce .bitmonero/bitmonero.log @selsta ?
-
selsta
yes it will keep monero logs there but they usually aren't helpful during a crash
-
selsta
I meant something like a linux backtrace
-
volantaryism1[m]
Not sure if this is a bug but if you send a tx to one of your subadresses in the same wallet on the gui it only reports the tx being sent and not being recieved in the transaction tab, balance is fine tho

hennyh: when did the crashing start?

<hennyh> So the last crash happened 'last night' (it's 9am-ish now), in the log i found the following entries:
-

-
DisBotXMR
-
DisBotXMR
<hennyh> then the previous day (on the previous release) it just shut off during the day, but I can't find anything in the logs around that time
-
selsta
Got control signal 2. Exiting without saving
-
selsta
usually that means it got a termination signal from outside and not a crash?
-
DisBotXMR
<hennyh> hmm i've got it running at the moment, i'll wait to see if it happens again
-
DisBotXMR
<hennyh> bit hard to diagnose anything without logs, don't want to waste your time

Thank you @sethsimmons . I have a question, how much storage needed to store those monero metrics from 2019 until now?

-
volantaryism1[m]
floam412: monero is not aiding anyone
-
volantaryism1[m]
An overzelous regulator wont kill monero but they could damage its potential
-
floam412
-
volantaryism1[m]
floam412: getting monero banned of all exchanges would do a lot of damage
-
floam412
fuck the suits
-
volantaryism1[m]
These regulators are cancer - i am not supporting them, i am just saying you cant pretend they dont exist
-
floam412
worrying about what the suits do defeats the purpose of crypto
-
floam412
if I ever feel like that, I would be doing all my business with Bitcoin, because that is easier to comply with regulation
-
floam412
I'm in monero because I feel that I shouldn't have to justify any of my transactions ever
-
volantaryism1[m]
You should always worry about what a goverment can do - just look at the 20th century... or any other
-
floam412

-
floam412
mad profitz?
-
volantaryism1[m]
floam412: to starve any state of resources it uses to oppress by not engaging with its monetary system as much as possible

<hennyh> monero being banned on all exchanges could actually be a good thing - less exposure to crypto mania
-
ditatompel
floam412: For me, Monero is not always taking profit.
-
volantaryism1[m]
DisBotXMR: bad for adoption is bad for the currency
-
DisBotXMR
<hennyh> adoption would come from actually exchanging it for goods and services, which would improve its currency properties
-
DisBotXMR
<hennyh> rather than predominantly exchanging for local currency at exchange
-
volantaryism1[m]
Explaining how monero solves a solution to a problem that people dont even know exists is hard enough, getting delisted would make that much harder
-
volantaryism1[m]
DisBotXMR: its a chicken/egg scenario - no users = no goods and services = no users
-
volantaryism1[m]
Monero does have a lot of real world exchange, regardless of gov approval of such goods
-
DisBotXMR
<hennyh> yeah you're basically bartering with Monero, but people would only want it if they're convinced of its utility - the utility may become more apparent with increased income tax, wealth taxes, surveillance, etc... which is the way things are tranding
-
volantaryism1[m]
Dont forget inflation tax and tax bracket creep ontop of that
-
DisBotXMR
<hennyh> very good point, hidden inflation tax will be a big one
-
-
volantaryism1[m]
Memes are good for adoption
-
volantaryism1[m]
WrappedXMR is also good for adoption, it gives a lot of traders inital exposure to monero when they wouldnt encounter it otherwise
-
volantaryism1[m]
I know this is controversial as it removes xmr's privacy
-
volantaryism1[m]
It also locks up a lot of monero too
-
floam412
what is wrappedxmr?
-
volantaryism1[m]
floam412: 'wrapping' monero onto another blockchain by e.g turning it into an ERC-20 token that is redeemable for an equivalent amount of xmr
-
volantaryism1[m]
Wrapped xmr allows for decentralized xmr loans/lending/buying on ethereum or any other chains defi ecosystem
-

am i blind, or does the GUI not have a function to import_outputs ? i see offline signing, and key image export, but no output import

Possibly it assumes you never get out of sync ? Normally, outputs and key images piggy back on tx data transfers.

in this case the outputs aren't spent yet, OCD me just wants to see the correct balance in the cold wallet. (which i do, just had to use the CLI to import the outputs after failing to find option in gui)

-
ndorf
FWIW it seems that the other two functions (key image export, and offline signing) do work :)

hm, interesting. it seems that after using `sweep_single` from a hot/cold wallet pair, that tx doesn't show up in `show_transfers` (in the hot/viewkey-only wallet)

it does correctly show up as spent in `incoming_transfers`.

cutemountains: even if assuming your premise is true, arguendo, that would be an argument to use monero. nobody wants to spend something that’s going to be worth more tomorrow
-
moneromooo
You gotta learn to see the world and then apply some thinking.
-
cutemountains[m]
I get that but why would anyone hold Monero if they can't get rich from the gains.
-
moneromooo
I mean, I'm not saying to spend months at it. Just small sanity checks.
-
moneromooo
Do you get rich from holding onto your significant other ?
-
moneromooo
Well, I dunno, maybe you're that kind of person, no offense.
-
bobbieweirder[m]
cutemountains: i would say it’s the same reason people diversify any assets
-
moneromooo
But if you're here for money and know what future price changes wil be, use it :)
-
moneromooo
Then you're set for life and you can live :)
-
moneromooo
And seriously, you should learn to think for yourself.
-
cutemountains[m]
I can think for myself. Are you a hodler?
-
nioc
remember every breath starts with an exhale, not an inhale
-
bobbieweirder[m]
it’s risk management. even if you think bitcoin in the long run will outrun everyone else in the long run, some people may want to hedge by diversifying
-
sech1
Last I checked, Monero is not trending to zero against Bitcoin anymore
-
moneromooo
It's still mixing things, which typically makes you make bad decisions. I'd try to separate things. Monetary gains/losses in a corner. Other things (like privacy, in this case) in another. etc. Then you can compare. As it is, your question belies confusion due to this mixup.
-
moneromooo
Until you can separate things and compare, you'll just make bad decisions.
-
moneromooo
Anyway, that's my being helpful for the day. Back to code we go...
-
moneromooo
(and btw it's hard to do so, I'm not claiming to be able to do it well myself)
-
bobbieweirder[m]
agreeing with moneromooo. many people value monero beyond the opportunity to get rich/big gains. you can value a project even if you know there is $$ opportunity cost to it in the short term
-
cutemountains[m]
Wouldn't Zcash be safer?
-
hyc
cutemountains[m]: safer how?
-
XMR|patix0331[m]
What do you guys thinking about ARRR?
-
sech1
ARRR? Trusted setup, largely abandoned by the devs, ASCI mined
-
sech1
3 red flags, combo!
-
bobbieweirder[m]
safer in terms of privacy or in terms of market gains? if the idea is to adopt a privacy project, monero is superior being less centralized than zcash. it is faster and easier to use, default privacy (which is more important than people think)
-
Livefreeordie[m]
<sech1 "ARRR? Trusted setup, largely aba"> This
-
bobbieweirder[m]
if you just want to get your toes wet with privacy projects, invest in both! but i think the more you read the more you will realize monero is much better positioned to achieve privacy
-
clavi
can I set a wallet directory for monero-wallet-cli?
-
clavi
the config file only lets me set a single wallet
-
Livefreeordie[m]
ARRR sounded alright at first glance but has serious drawbacks compared to XMR
-
clavi
I want to be able to run something like "monerocli <walletname>" from any directory
-
Livefreeordie[m]
<bobbieweirder[m] "if you just want to get your toe"> Yeah I agree
-
clavi
without typing the full paths each time
-
selsta
clavi: if you only have a couple wallets you can setup aliases in your shell
-
clavi
you mean a separate alias for each wallet?
-
selsta
yes
-
clavi
hmm
-
clavi
would be neat to have a "--wallet-dir" option in the CLI config file
-
clavi
I'd open a GH issue but they're locked atm
-
endor00[m]
<clavi "would be neat to have a "--walle"> You could make a bash script that only takes the wallet name and appends that to a preconfigured wallet dir, then passes it to the wallet program
-
selsta
clavi: opened an issues for you
monero-project/monero #7674

thanks :)

I want to make a privacy focused dapp with Monero as the main token for transactions. Any examples of Monero marketplaces, usage like Metamask? How to get Monero in Web3?
-
charolastra
you don't. afaik you need 'smart contracts' for that
-
ChristopherTrimb
Wouldn't the obvious conversion between non-Monero tokens and Monero in a contract expose your identity? Sucks that you would need to side chain / ETH convert to actually use Monero in a proper application.
-
endor00[m]
Technically there's "wrapped xmr", but yes: since it's an eth-based token, it loses the privacy features of 'native' Monero
-
endor00[m]
Though you may be interested in following the development of Tari (a Monero-based smart contract plaftorm)
-
endor00[m]
You can easily integrate Monero in things that aren't dapps. Not everything needs to run on a smart contract to be "decentralized". Just look at Haveno, for instance
-
Inge-
ChristopherTrimb: haveno is a DEX based on BISQ code, with XMR as the base currency. COMIT and FarCaster are true atomic swap projects for BTC <--> XMR (and with Taproot, will be indistinguishable from any other taproot tx)
-
endor00[m]
A well-implemented multisig escrow can get you a long way
-
Inge-
no reason why you wouldn't get eth <--> xmr atomic swaps too
-
endor00[m]
Oooh, imagine the potential of eth-xmr atomic swaps in the context of smart contracts
-
Inge-
eth smart contract that pays out xmr ;)
-
endor00[m]
(Then again, I guess I'm probably just reimagining wrapped xmr?)
-
endor00[m]
Xmr mining pool that runs on eth :D
-
endor00[m]
Would be cool as a concept, except the gas fees would be obscene
-
ChristopherTrimb
Cool, thanks for the info, I'll look into these projects. Found this on Reddit:

anon_82641[m]
Use wXMR and create a bounty on gitcoin lol
-
anon_82641[m]
Has anyone seen a bookstore for banned bools in XMR?
-
anon_82641[m]
i.e. dr seuss, pgp, come and take it.
-
anon_82641[m]
Banned books both from a legal perspective & private book seller perspective i.e. amazon ebay
-
Kontvolkoren
PirateChain keeps going up
-
XMR|patix0331[m]
XMR too :D
-
moneromooo
tari isn't monero based, it's mimblewimble based.
-
moneromooo
Not sure why so many people think it's monero based, I've heward that several times before...
-
Inge-
moneromooo: when fluffypony started talking about it, it sounded like a Monero L2, and was talked about quite a lot in context of Monero.
-
selsta
he said sidechain, not L2 AFAIK
-
selsta
though don't know the exact definition of sidechain
-
Inge-
Initial messaging seemed to connect it closer to Monero than what later came to be at least
-
vtnerd
ndorf : yes, you are supposed to run clearnet and tor/i2p simulatenously. the limited protocol tor/i2p hopefully does not leak identifiable info
-
ndorf
nice, thanks
-
selsta
vtnerd: I assume someone could attempt to DoS a clearnet address and try to correlate it to tor address
-
selsta
so if you are super paranoid might be based to have incoming connections disabled
-
selsta
best*

volantaryism1[m]
<cutemountains[m] "Why should I use Monero when it "> Why should i use bitcoin when it trends to zero against dogecoin?
-
ndorf
so does anyone know what exactly the rescan_spent wallet command does?
-
selsta
it rechecks which key images are spent
-
selsta
there was a bug where the spent status wasn't serialized correctly a couple versions ago, rescan_spent solved it
-
ndorf
ah i see. thanks
-
ndorf
would be nice if that call returned the spending txids and not just true/false
-
moneromooo
monero-project/monero #6616 gets you the height, close enough ?
-
volantaryism1[m]
txstreet.com/xmr-btc
-
ndorf
hm, maybe? this is referring to that new #7673 btw.
-
volantaryism1[m]
Txstreet live
-
ndorf
seems the only way to fix is to look up the spending tx at key image import time, right?
-
ndorf
so what's the destination of a dummy change output, anyway?
-
moneromooo
A random address.

Do you think that you are too intelligent to be in a cult? Then I would encourage you to look into how any other cult works. They aren't populated by stupid people. Aum Shinrikyo was almost exclusively university professors and graduates. For Pete's sake - they had the know-how and means to make WMDs.
-
gdktixhfjq
As to Monero, I would encourage you to look at Jonestown mass-suicide. You know why Jones killed them all? Because he was afraid he is loosing control over them. People like that will burn everything around them rather than give up control. Being smart doesn't make you immune to being in a cult. This is the most valuable lesson Monero taught me.
