If you use third party nodes, you're at the mercy of them though. They can't steal your money, but they can spy on you, and genreally DoS you.

If you can sync on a SSD, it's *massively* faster than HDD.

Possibly it assumes you never get out of sync ? Normally, outputs and key images piggy back on tx data transfers.

It's a quick function. It sends the daemon your key images, and looks them up in the spent key image table.
