Tor and I2P are pretty nice, though. So was Bitcoin, as the initial launch of the technology basis for Monero (though Monero is better in an evolutionary sense, improving upon Bitcoin).

Note that I mean original Bitcoin, not any particular branch from it that exists now.

One use case that comes to mind for me is being able to transact while you are personally not available to transact, so that your meatspace life activities can't be easily correlated in time with your Monero transactions.

Of course, if we're talking about "practical terms, at this point in time", I'd say PGP is disqualified, as there are subsequent encrypted comms implementations that are better for privacy.
-

I guess what's going through my head ultimately reaches the point of "I'm not sure it's possible to make a coherent argument against the statement that Monero is the best thing since PGP unless one argues on the grounds of that not representing a coherent standard."
-
apotheon
More in the apparent spirit of what you said, though, I agree that Monero is *tremendously* important for potential expansion of individual privacy right now.

It's potential for helping spread and improve privacy in economic transactions seems incredibly vast, and there's not much that can compare to economics in its importance of privacy for making lives, and the world, better.

I better spend all my Monero before it dips a little
-
BigBoiiMike1
How do i sync my wallet with that bot?
-
entry1
This is just a concept for crypto currency in general. I feel like there really may be a need for custodial accounts with the lack of technical knowledge of the average person and the potential for disaster if they lose their private keys/info. I'm wondering if there would be more options (preferably a fee paid each month and insured from theft like a bank etc) start coming to Monero like they have with Bitcoin like Coinbase
-
entry1
etc. As much as I think monero will see such a large gain, I don't think the average person will be transacting in it or want to be able to lose all their capital in an instant if they "mess" up.
-
entry1
Wondering if anyone else feels the same sentiment. Not for anyone with crypto knowledge, but I think it is a good start.

for sure - i wonder if we will get back to ATH

definitely, the bullrun on btc and eth might continue for a while but nobody wants their landlord to be mad about them not paying their rent while spending thousands of dollars on NFT's (which the landlord can see!)

it's so hard to predict the peak of crypto markets

but xmr is the best long term hold

Yeah . . . because eventually financial privacy will become a more obviously important factor.

I suppose its USD price might go up, too, but that's more a side effect.

<volantaryism1[m] "entry1: these exist already"> Referring to xmr, you're just talking about central exchanges like Kraken/Binance as far as a custodial account

Why pay for a safe deposit box when you can leave your valuables with your downstairs neighbour ?
-

wait
-
apotheon
In this analogy . . .
-
apotheon
Which is the safe deposit box service and which is the neighbor?
-
entry1
<volantaryism1[m] "entry1: why pay someone to hold "> Agreed. So non-tech users should just keep their funds in an exchange with their identity connected to it? Like if someone dies and they give no one their keys, that wealth is gone. Unlikely that most people using monero are sharing the keys with anyone that has any technical knowledge to recover the wallet etc (even if they pass down the seed etc). A lot of crypto will be
-
entry1
permanently lost when generations pass. Can't really use the same analogy to something physical as any dipshit can take gold/silver to a pawn shop. How the hell are non-tech people going to know what to do with inherited crypto without being robbed
-
entry1
Just food for thought, not relevant to Monero as a whole. Feel like there are going to be a slew of issues in the coming years for transferring crypto from relatives etc.
-
volantaryism1[m]
People are smart enough to understand crypto - especially if given the right info
-
hmmp
you tell where to find the seed and then which friend to contact for wallet recovery
-
entry1
<volantaryism1[m] "People are smart enough to under"> Agreed, but that is going to take a long time for people to understand. Most people can't remember their email password.
-

<hmmp "you tell where to find the seed "> That's currently what I do lol

It would be good to do a write up. Maybe I'll do that because it may help someone out. Especially planning steps because that is 99% of the work.

moneromooo: i got the new command line item working on my local checkout, the one from here:
monero-project/monero #5979
-
KSaunderson
there is still some error checking and stuff to do, but i can tell from debugging linesand using a command line such as: build/Linux/master/debug/bin/monerod --allow-local-ip --add-exclusive-node 192.168.1.4:18080 --p2p-external-network-address 192.168.1.4
-
KSaunderson
that the handle_handshake() and try_ping() are using the new value, if supplied...
-
KSaunderson
so what are the next steps? make a PR? is there some test process
-
KSaunderson
Thanks!
-
moneromooo
Testing would likely require two NICs, right ?
-
KSaunderson
i did think about using ip alias feature of linux
-
moneromooo
Well, if you can make a test that works on any linux, feel free ^_^
-
KSaunderson
well it would require sudo i guess for the ifconfig
-
KSaunderson
so probably no go?
-
moneromooo
No sudo.
-
moneromooo
So if you've tested it yourself, a PR now is fine.
-
moneromooo
If you have messy multiple commits, squash.
-
moneromooo
And rebase to latest master before PR.
-
KSaunderson
sure, sounds good
