Hi #monero! Am I making a mistake by investing $1000 in a CPU-focused rig which will be used to mine monero? The plan is to hold the XMR for years, maybe swap for other altcoins. I expect a crash in BTC within a year and therefore want a lot of altcoins ASAP.
-
LVanon
You guys helped me earlier build a rig for about $1100, estimated 15000 H/s
-
LVanon
Just haven't bought it yet
-
nioc
If it was me then I would just buy the monero if the only purpose of the rig is to mine
-
nioc
Have you looked at the historical charys of altcoins when btc goes down in price
-
LVanon
They increase?
-

-

-
nioc
so you are basing your decision on no info
-
LVanon
true that, I need to lurk more
-
nioc
There are short term fluctuations and there are bear markets
-
nioc
2 different things
-
nioc
When you said crash I think bear market
-
apotheon
LVanon: Other cryptocurrencies tend to fluctuate somewhat in tune with BTC, probably because of people who get into BTC during upswings, and some of them get into "altcoins", then they all run away when BTC falters.
-
nioc
You will never step in the same river twice, but you will probably still get wet

as2333
LVanon, the obvious problem is that the long term price can't be predicted so it's impossible to tell whether mining(or buying) is going to a be a mistake or not.
-
apotheon
ndorf: I think the PR is ready for you in the morning.
-
ndorf
sweet. thanks again, appreciate the interest and contribution
-
apotheon
glad to pitch in a bit
-
nioc
We take close to two years to mine the 5 xmr he could buy right now
-
LVanon
as2333: Thanks for the input. I choose to believe 100% that it's a good longtime investment, at least BTC, ETH and XMR.
-
nioc
Whatever your mining estimate is now you will end up getting less than that
-
LVanon
true that nioc
-
as2333
LVanon, also what nioc says
-
apotheon
I'm pretty sure BTC won't self-destruct entirely in the next five years, at least.
-
LVanon
so when it comes to mining I should put my focus on profitable GPU mining like eth?
-
nioc
It's profitable now that will change
-
nioc
Do not know what the ROI is for that so can't really tell you
-
apotheon
It'll change as better CPUs/GPUs come out (depending on what mining you're doing).
-
apotheon
I feel like the biggest reason to do small-time mining of cryptocurrencies is to "buy" with electricity (and thus only indirectly with fiat currency), instead of directly with fiat.
-
LVanon
apotheon: Exactly, I pay 0.23 SEK per kWh atm, and 1 SEK is about ~8 USD
-
apotheon
Basically the only ways to get some cryptocurrency are to work for it, to buy indirectly with fiat, or to buy directly with fiat.
-
apotheon
LVanon: That's probably enough to get more out than you put in with Monero, I think, at least for a while, but as faster CPUs arrive that will change.
-
LVanon
Indeed!
-
apotheon
Even breaking even has its benefits, though, because of the fact you break even when you buy directly.
-
apotheon
The downside is that buying directly gets you the Monero right away, while it's still cheaper.
-
apotheon
(rather than more expensive at some later time)
-
LVanon
So maybe I can buy a great CPU now, do some mining, keep the XMR, and eventually just buy the rest and make it a gaming computer etc
-
LVanon
buy the rest of the computer parts *
-
nioc
The higher the price goes the more people mine the less Monero you actually obtain
-
apotheon
If that's something you want to do with it, sure. Pay attention to your tax laws for mining, if you're doing it in a way that isn't ironclad-private, though.
-
nioc
Yes if you want a computer anyway it's a way of discounting it
-
apotheon
exactly
-
LVanon
apotheon nioc: Thank you. I will try to buy the parts you guys told me about a few days ago
-
apotheon
Note that when I was talking about the electricity cost making it profitable, that doesn't count the cost of buying the parts for the mining rig in the first place.
-
LVanon
I want to mine and keep the xmr for years and while mining also learn more about the technology.
-
LVanon
Of course, hence upgrading it to a workstation/gaming computer later on
-
apotheon
. . . so yeah, it's a rebate for the gaming computer, where the rebate is paid in Monero.
-
apotheon
In the US, tax laws for mining are kinda sucky. You get taxed for income when mining, then get taxed capital gains if you later sell it for fiat currency.
-
LVanon
I thank you all for respecting me when my questions can easily be answered by google but I do not want to make a mistake. I know some of you feel like I am making a mistake, but with my electricity prices and the plan to later upgrade it makes me believe it is not a mistake. Also my 100% belief in XMR/crypto in the long run
-
LVanon
apotheon: I plan on telling nobody about my mining business, everything offline
-
apotheon
Yeah, you'll probably want to look into the privacy needs of the miner's network activity, too.
-
apotheon
I don't know enough about the state of the art to give you any advice about how to handle that part. My naïve guess would be that you could use Tor somehow.
-
apotheon
. . . but I could easily be mistaken about that making any sense.
-
LVanon
tor? for mining? the IP-address I will be mining from is not going to be an issue. And the XMR will be stored in an offline wallet so it will only get deposited, not moved around
-
LVanon
I am not interested in turning it into fiat somehow anytime in the coming years
-

so what was your big idea gingeropolous?
-
apotheon
I'm curious about this mysterious (to me) career.
-
apotheon
Given the "sitting through a presentation by someone else for an idea I proposed years ago" situation, I might've just walked out. That's insulting.
-
apotheon
I've also had something like it happen to me.
-
lza_menace
yeah, same
-
apotheon
The aftermath of raising the question of why nobody liked the idea when I brought it up is what makes me think that these days I'd just walk out rather than point out the discrepancies.

What are the downsides of using Tor or an I2P gateway for mining?
-
nc1236[m]
Latency
-
nc1236[m]
The likelihood of you mining invalid shares goes up, but your results may vary (I've heard of people mining via Tor with no issues)
-
apotheon
nc1236[m]: Why does that likelihood increase?
-
apotheon
Is it because of the latency?
-
apotheon
. . . or was that a separate issue from the latency you mentioned?
-
hyc
latency is all
-
hyc
your shares may arrive later than some other successful miner
-
hyc
so you lose out on the block you would have mined
-
apotheon
gotcha

Thanks.

lza_menace
do nodes broadcast their RPC ports at all in their p2p conversations?
-
lza_menace
might I be able to gather that info in a project like this?
github.com/cdiv1e12/py-levin
-
moneromooo
If you ask it to (--public-rpc IIRC).
-
lza_menace
what I mean to say is, can I use py-levin to ask a remote node via p2p what it's RPC port is?
-
lza_menace
or just levin in general I guess
-
lza_menace
the peer_retriever.py script returns IPs and p2p ports - I'm trying to see if I can get RPC ports instead
-
lza_menace
just not sure if p2p exchanges that info
-
lza_menace
(trying to build a scraper to get publicly available full nodes w/ RPC exposed)

(so I can populate on
